Our food system is broken, outdated and failing us all.
Since 1990, the average value of farms in Australia has soared by more than 220%, while the number of farms valued under $500,000 plummeted by 54%. This presents a large barrier for young farmers, who often struggle to secure the necessary capital to buy land and start their operations.
The high cost of machinery and other startup expenses presents additional hurdles, with equipment running into the hundreds of thousands of dollars. Some machinery and implements are only used seasonally and require regular maintenance when not in use on the farm.
Generational farming in Australia is in decline. While family farms still operate around 95% of Australian agricultural businesses, the overall number of farming families has dropped by roughly 15% per decade since the 1980s. The total number of farms fell from over 206,000 in 1954-55 to around 89,400 in 2020-21, with projections of another 30% drop by 2050.
The average age of Australian farmers is around 56–58, notably higher than other sectors. Many are reaching retirement age with few or no successors to take over.
Smaller family farms are constantly being bought and consolidated into larger corporate operations, a trend projected to continue. This gives larger corporations more control over price to consumer and in many cases a negative cost to the environment.
Low profit margins, coupled with the impacts of climate change (which have reduced average farmer profits by 23% since 2000), make it difficult for the next generation to justify taking over.
